little story for those interested .. as a nipper in cornwall i remember sitting in front of for what seemed like hours on numerous occasions a bank of small fruit machines in a arcade in cornwall called the "pot of gold" amongst other establishments of the time, the mid to late 80s as a rough guess . the machine was called cash and carry by now i believe barcrest (back then i didnt know or care) anyway when i joined the mecca i dreamt of owning such a machine, various posts were stuck up, nothing happened apart from tumble weed blowing in .. anyway 4 or 5 years ago maybe more .... i was in cornwall on holiday at our static caravan when we owned one , and i was told to call somebody as they had seen my post . so sitting on the caravan step trying to get a signal i rang this number and spoke to the fella on the other end anyway he said he had a cash n carry and that i could have it, however he liked "deals" not money, so what had i got ... well i dont have fruit machines so couldnt offer him any , so he said well .......ive got a list of some machines i want if you get me one of them we can do a straight swop . i had a paper and pen with me at this point and he spilled out aload of classic titles like fruit snappa, silver ghost , reel crazy, amoungst others and right at the end he said bellfruit pussycat .... and i thought to myself well i reckon i might be able to get one of those , so after about 4 hours on the phone chatting what must have been shit to eachother about our lives and what he had etc , we left it that if i could find one on his list then the deal could / would be done . off i went , within 2 weeks i had seen brought and secured a pussy cat bellfruit clubber for 50 or 80 quid locally , i let the cash and carry man know straight away . however he was having some tuff life lessons and happenings so couldnt do anything until he was sorted and clear of it all, we all know life and family etc are more important than a fruit machine ever so i left it . he made me aware he was a man of his word so i didnt need to worry as it wasnt going anywhere else, no matter how long it too , but he should be sorted soon . anyway months passed , years passed with the odd message back and forth in between ourselves . well ............ as of a unplanned last minute road trip of 7 hours (round trip) and a swop of bellfruit pussy cat clubber i have the machine you see in attached pictures . i cannot say how happy i am to see one in the flesh etc and actually own it now after such a long time its going to be a marmite machine for many, as many will class it as boring but for me it holds a very special bond with me . so if the fella is reading this who now has a pussycat bellfruit clubber whom i met last night after so many years and things happening thank you so so very very much for allowing me to do the swop with you and for you keeping your word about the machine happy happy days .. if i could cartwheel i would .. i cant so i wont haha p.s there wont be a long resto thread about this machine, i want to get it working , the roms dumped and play and enjoy it

If it is lessons in Electronics you are looking for, a good starting point is enrolling on a 3 year HNC in Electronics and communications. Testing ic's requires knowledge of what they are actually doing, much is learned by researching Boolean algebra which a lot of basic ic's use along with truth tables and data sheets. Learn to read circuit diagrams and understand what is happening or supposed to happen. Failing that it is remove components and refit new ones one by one until the fault is fixed which becomes very expensive and time consuming. An example give is removed old batteries and put them in the cupboard... were they leaking when removed? If so, removing the old battery will not stop the deterioration, the leakage has to be cleaned off and corrosion stopped almost straight away or it will just continue eating away.

ive had these boards with no track damage and battery has been on a fly lead and they just gone in reset so i asked for help on here and they told me about the ram and bad tracks so i just put new ram back in sockets and ic 19 boards now up and running all so had mux error replaced tr43 no more mux error and do has andy said check tracks with meter hope this helps

Any board I work on, sell, blah blah, I etch details somewhere on it along with a security sticker in had made that leaves void details if it is tampered with. No one can try and swap their shit for something I have repaired or sold on then, saying it doesn't work when I know it did. They have to return the board I sent them. Never had bother since using these methods, surprise surprise.

I made a few for Bell-Fruit mid '80's (scorpion 1) machines. It is a lot of work, but when you are started and the first few looms are connected, it is easy. Tip: lable all wires and lampholders and check it twice! Also had one machine which had a fault in their own wiring diagram paper/booklet. (they had a double strobe/data number on 2 lampholders printed. With a little logic and a few tries with the machine in test mode those print errors are easily fixed. Happened me only once, don't want to scare you 😉 )

Another head scratcher solved this morning. This one has had me going demented for the last two days. It's a board I'd done previously that came back with 'sometimes it won't boot' fault. On fire up it booted and ran every time with one exception, reel A wasn't spinning just juddering. Well we all know that one, don't we? A quick swap of the 4 reel driver transistors (BCX38) and power back on and ...... yep the fault is still there. Some quick checks with the scope didn't really prove anything conclusive barring the fact that the waveforms on reel A weren't as long as the other two and showed a rising voltage as the waveform progressed. As I couldn't get a continuous reel spin it was proving quite difficult to make proper comparisons between the reels. Moving back towards the source the next chip is a 74LS04 and this was substituted but the fault remained. End of the chain (or the beginning depending how you look at it) is IC5 (6821). The waveforms coming out of the chip still showed a slight difference between the length and width of the pulses but again without a constant reel spin it was difficult to make a conclusive diagnosis. In with a new 6821 and again no difference. Hmm, there really is only one other thing that might affect this and that's the CS line driven from IC9. In with a new one and what do you know reel A starts spinning normally again! Funny thing is it looked like IC5 and IC9 had alredy been changed, albeit not socketed, which is why I was somewhat reluctant to venture in that direction. Glad I did though. This fault was very similar to the one I documented here a page or so back and now I think about it the alpha display was a little erratic too.

Oooohhhhh I've been waiting for this, literally, for years. This is the first time we've had a quality DX for this machine using the proper £6 ROMs, what a treat The £10 and £15 ROMs for this machine never really floated my boat, the £6 ROMs are fantastic. I really like this DX as well, sometimes these "less than perfect" DXes created using a combination of photos and chopping work in Photoshop can have a better feel about them than a perfect clinical DX, and this is one such DX IMO. Many thanks DAD - I put £150 through in my first sitting and was rewarded towards the end by a £46 streak. £30 on a "wild thing" Red Hot Roll (5 x JP spins, which was nice), followed by a £10 mixed roll, then three holds on red sevens, just like the old days

This one of the classic machines that you *never* get bored playing. Lo tech, good sounds, and simple goals to aim for. I remember downloading the classic and the roms at the hovel several years ago..and I must of played £50 through it on my first round. Then played it in test mode..stupid I know..but lining up a red hot roll every credit, and then realising the colour of the roll is unimportant, it's how much behind %age it is..for a long time it didn't click that it takes about £40 for the red roll...simply because the machine is building up a second pot. Always nice to see a different flavour of a classic. Oldskooler

The band aid on this machine was a pain in the arse to use when going for lines. Nice little machine though J
