The short spin is the result of a variator fault. The Brenco variator is more complicated than the usual constantly-turning notched wheel. There are TWO such wheels, each driven by its own 10rpm motor. The main cam motor runs when either one or the other closes its contacts, meaning that the interruptions are caused by the DIFFERENCE between the two. One interrupter runs continuously, while the other stops when the 'START' button is lit. This gives a random element in the variator action, as the second cam waits for the player to press the START button. On this machine, the second interrupter is stopped on the closed position, and so the main cam motor runs its cycle with no interruptions, giving the consistent short reelspin. A second cam on this non-functioning set gives the HOLD after WIN, and, accordingly, the machine never gives this hold. The motor of this set is powered from the back contact of cam 6 on the main controller, the START light cam. The START light operates correctly, so the LIVE is clearly present at this switch. The fault shouldn't be too difficult to trace. I'll find some time this afternoon...

It's looking like a problem with the main board. If the eprom card, sound card and cpu card are all from a guaranteed working machine. It can only really be the motherboard. I had one like this the other week it seems like a boot/reset fail. I'm not hearing an 'alarm'? So not sure about that. Be careful how your touching those chips and parts too mate you should wear an earth strap. One bit of static can kill a board. P.s one of those reels looks familiar to me!
