That’s caught me out before as well John.... Flick plug on, waited 10secs, nothing, insta thought card is knackered 🤔 Tried it again on the off chance another day, but got distracted for about 25secs after switching machine on and wallop - machine boots! Cant believe how long it takes. To be honest, I’ve got battery’s on my JPM machines, but I don’t think it makes them boot any quicker. In a race to boot, I reckon JPM Impact would finish last out of all the Fruit Machine manufacturer’s.1 point

Hi Mavroz, I agree with you that it's partially implemented security. It did seem like it's there for more but wasn't actually used in practice as much. I've never previously seen 8mb proms on epoch so it seems Extreme is unusual there... I may be wrong about the unusual boot chip being there for the large size Eproms... it's difficult to tell 100% I did sort of predict it but as you say it's different on your machine? What we do know though is all other techs there are hardwired links that govern the Eprom sizing. Epoch does seem to be a bit more around the board with what's used. So I still think the boot chip is having some effect on the configuration. My way of thinking is the mpu needs some way of knowing those are 8mb and not 1mb Eproms and reading them correctly. This section out of the Epoch tech manual describes the boot chip. Where I'm saying I think it's for sizing and you're saying partial security I think both can be taken from it. Still don't really 100% understand how it was used in practice though... see what you can make of it.1 point

The game roms and sound roms are fine that have been uploaded above. They run fine in the emulator, well at least the 0.3 set do. Not sure why they don't run in the real machine other than a knackered board, or as said need the roms re-burning. (Not sure why the roms would be erased) I don't think that is quite right about the boot chip being there for rom sizing. It was an unimplemented security feature. (Well, mostly un-implemented). I am sure someone will argue i am wrong, it is what i have been told many times in the past and it seems logical to me. I say this as i have an Extreme machine sat here, that has the same file sizes / Eprom requirement as the Double Dragon software but only 1 x sound rom and the boot chip in this machine is V6. So, V8 cannot really be anything to do with the Eprom size selection. The only explanation i have is that V8 chips were originally used for Extreme games (their boot chips could have been allocated V8) and this is the original MPU with the Double Dragon machine. Other extreme machines may have had replacement MPU's put in them with the original Boot chip on the board, the most common being V6 and as previously experiments show, most boot chips will work with most manufacturers such as Global, Impulse , Maygay etc etc. I am pretty sure when i had my Epoch test rig i made a video with the rig running Global Software, changing the Boot chip (V4,V6,V8 and V10 i think). This didn't make a blind bit of difference to whether the game ran or not. The only software that wouldn't use any old boot chip was AC games (or Cool Games), Poker Face, which had to have the V10 boot chip or again, if i remember correctly the Alpha Display showed "Invalid Prom Opt"... Good luck. Ps, could do with the number reelband scanning or good photos of the numbers along with the noodle carton from the reel bands. Photo's may be the best option as the glue used on these bands is a twat and usually means breaking the bands removing them.1 point

Looking at the file sizes: 8mb program roms 27c801 4mb sound roms Which is strange to say the least as that's huuuuge for program roms, 1mb being the most common for Epoch. That supports my theory with the boot chip being uncommon though...and there for the sizing reason (Epoch doesn't have the soldered hardware links on the main board for Rom configuration like other techs. The information contained is on the boot chips).1 point

Your welcome! Glad to help out... shame the text file doesn’t have the checksums of the sound proms in it as well... What size proms have you the sound blown in to?? 4Meg??1 point
