  2. OK, we have a winner. I can't tell you how long I've spent on this and as always it ends up with something silly, not obvious though. So what was it, your all wondering? I spent most of today comparing with a good board to no avail. Two of the CPU buffer chips hadn't been changed so out of desperation I socketed them too but they were proved OK by substitution. Before I put on my cossie to jump in the Thames I thought I'd just try a hunch. As the board wouldn't go into attract mode and then started playing when a coin was inserted, I was thinking perhaps removing IC5 (TMS9902) might show something. Games that need the black box connected talk to it via IC5 and if it's not fitted coins will appear to be accepted but won't clock up credits. This why some games will run without IC5 and some won't. Anyway what happened when IC5 was removed? Well blow me down, it goes into attract mode after a few seconds. Swapping this chip to IC10 and it boots again but doesn't go into attract. I'm now starting to smell a rat..... I'm thinking this must be a fake, it works but not as a TMS9902 that's for sure. I tried a bit of acetone on the end of PHILIPINES and the last 3 characters were definitely fading. Not sure about the plastic between the pins as it's not finished properly? The text isn't straight either. Why didn't I spot this earlier you ask? Well going back some weeks now and the the fault I was looking for was no boot and of course both the TMS9902's proved blameless in that respect. If anyone would care to explain what might be going on and why this chip would cause these bizarre symptoms I'd be extremely interested to know. In the meantime I'm thinking a just want to shove some chop suey up the manufacturer's backside. Time for a well earnt drink methinks.🤩 PS: Just for completeness I put my 'real' test 9902 into IC5 and it works a treat.

  5. rot around IC22, check inputs to IC22 to make sure IC23 is producing the strobes, if all is well check IC8 input for that switch like to check if the strobe pulse is making through to the chip input, if it is then check IC8 that would be a good start as the board has had rot and the switch matrix decoding is right next to the battery!
