  10. I've got a PC92 on the bench which is giving me a real case of itchy head!! It came in as a non booter and on inspection was found to be stuck in reset. The reason for this was corroded track in the reset circuit. Once this was made good it came out of reset and .....did absolutely nothing!! These can be horrors when you get to this point as it can be any of the PIO chips, CPU, CTC etc, etc. This time I was lucky as my hand was resting on the board over IC4 (PIO) and I noticed it was running quite warm. Out with the desolder tool and in with a socket. Before putting in a replacement I thought I'd switch on in case anything else might be suspect. Well, what do know she boots, runs and does everything except the functions of IC4 which are basically the 7 seg display and the triacs. OK, so flushed with success I thought I'd slip in the new PIO and wrap it up. Switch on no boot!! Remove chip, boots OK?? A faulty spare chip you all say, but no, tried it in another board and it's fine???? What is going on? All the other functions are testing OK so all the existing PIO's should be good. Looking back in this thread a couple of entries ago the SIO chip could be responsible although I don't see how. I'll swap that out tomorrow to see what happens. Watch this space....

  11. oh........ no static protection at all!! don't like how the chip was resting on the socket one pin across when the battery is still connected and voltage is still on the socket pins! I can see what he is getting at putting the chip in and out, that's one way of trying to get the oscillator to start up, but if it does its not going to stay running, he was waving that metal screwdriver very close to the live chip! and no idea why he was putting the screwdriver under that edge of the chip when it is much safer to other components on the board to do it from the other side of the chip edge...... but all good!! lol

  12. yes caps when cold loose capacitance especially when old! this results in the oscillator on the alpha display not starting up so it doesn't produce the 90v required for the vacuum display, so it appears dead! that's the usual problem why they fail when cold

  13. OH YES!!! anything is better than nothing!! RS, Farnell, mouser, digikey all good places, you just have to suck up the postage charges if below there set amount that's the only disadvantage! but better than keep buying fakes off ebay! trouble is sellers on eBay have cottoned on now that it is in there favour selling fake electronics! you buy and you don't realise it is fake, seller wins and has your money! you realise it IS fake and you have to send the bits back to them through there returns or ebay returns process usually at your cost, so they do refund if you do so because they then have the bits back to resell!! win win! basically the sellers don't loose anything!! It is illegal to knowingly send fake goods through the post but ebay don't recognise that so sellers HAVE to get the bits back before refunding! Until ebay tighten up on this loophole it will just continue to be rife with fake parts! but ebay do nothing and continue to do nothing so it is not likely to change anytime soon! so my advise as always is only buy through genuine parts resellers like RS etc!

  14. Ha Ha, thanks Riche I need a good laugh now and again in these difficult times. In the words of Shaggy it wasn't me! and I won't take the credit for it, but it's great to see members helping each other. I'm in awe of the depth of knowledge on here and the facilities some members have. Stay safe all

  17. Ok you do realise most wrist straps are around 1 meg ohm? The earth bond point is another 1 meg ohm this is so it dissipates static fine but won’t give you a shock in doing that because of the resistance my wrist strap measures 1 meg ohm and on the tester it tests for below 10 meg ohm to pass, this is my super duper expensive metal strap on my tester

  20. I doubt it, you can ask them if they have IPC 610 certification, that’s the industry standard thare are standards on soldering all laid down which is the bible I follow, this is the solder fillet specification, the components on the board I photographed above are not like this!!

  33. Here we are.Ron very kindly gave me the emblem.I got a fine brush and some paint from the range and set about making it look better and then laquered it.Im not an expert on badges but it looks ok to me,thanks ron.The new locks are on the lower door and should have been chrome but i think black suits it.They fitted very well and you cant even see where i moved the striker plates after going round with my black paint.Since restoring ive made a few adjustments etc and now its spot on.Makes a lovely noise when you pull the handle. The chrome roses around the locks are original.

  34. Jokers Wild Club Electro..Second time I have owned this game,Always loved this electro and reluctantly had to sell the last one with the rest of my collection because lack of space when moving from a 3 bed house with garage to a 2 bed bungalow. The only two machines kept for the limited space were my Each Way Treble club and Bingo Bell AWP. This was two years ago and decided to clear out my second bedroom and turn into my man cave with a much reduced collection... So this is the next addition,In these crazy times of ridiculous prices on Ebay,I bagged this bargain for just 25 of our British pounds. Arrived Monday evening and with it's bonus manual.. Even has it's refill key.. The only downsides if I can call them that are someone has converted the mech to the new 10p,the back of the mech's all loose, lost a couple of mounting bolts and replaced the original coin tube.Drilled the door to fit the power cable but happy they have left the bulgin socket intact so Nothing that can't be sorted. Noticed a slight bend of the reel shelf but this will be down to age. Powers up and plays mint but needs a good clean and the usual service,Looking at the hold timer the links have been increased rather than the usual doctoring. As it's never had any attention for many years,A full strip down, clean & service next on job list.
