  1. so after nearly 9 hours i finally think i have figured it out. and the fault was so simple that it has been overlooked a few times. if you watch the EEVblog on youtube you will of heard the first rule of troubleshooting.... "thou shalt check voltages" well here is the 5v rail as viewed on the scope.... i had checked the rail while having the board and psu set up on the bench with no peripherals attached and it was perfect, no ripple at all, i never even thought to check it in the machine untill i was probing address and data lines that i accidentally probed the 5v line and saw that! unplugging the peripherals one by one it turns out its the alpha that is dragging the rail down. i can only assume that it is outgassing and starting to draw too much current. and yes, with the alpha unplugged the sound is perfect and the game plays fine. such a simple result after chasing my own tail for over a day!! one other thing i noticed... with the psu on the floor and not connected to the machines earth connections. the board stayed in reset untill the reel connector was disconnected, there is a black wire on pin 2 of the reel plug that connects to an earth terminal on the cabinet. once this was removed the board booted fine. im not sure why this is but im going to check all ground connections and make sure they are good but nothing looks bad from what i can see. anyway, if anybody has a display for sale, send me a message please thanks for the help guys. i hope this thread helps somebody else in the future

  4. following on from the above post, i did some probing inside the psu and although the output side of the 5v regulator was smooth, the input side had quite a bad ripple on it, i followed it back to the 10000uf cap, replaced that (with a 15000uf one as i didn't have 10000uf) and everything is working spot on, display and all. typical. just goes to show though... even if a problem looks pretty technical, don't forget to check the simple obvious things!! lesson learnt!

  5. The M6376 chip on the ESP (sound/program) card sends a /BUSY signal from pin 1 which the M1 checks to see if a sample is still playing. Obviously this signal is missing because the chip is faulty or it's going through another chip somewhere which could be faulty. Try another ESP card and see if that cures it. If it doesn't, you need to trace the /BUSY signal back from pin 1 of the M6376 and see where it goes to. M6376_OKI.pdf

  6. Started on Take Your Pick yesterday afternoon. As Ron pointed out, a conversion on BFM's well-known Lucky Two's. This machine has a flaking sidewall on the right of the cab, where the chipboard/sawdust board has expanded through damp. It's better than it was, through standing in the warmth, but I'm not sure if I will ever be happy with it. Perhaps there's some spray-on treatment for it? The insides are remarkably clean. The BELL-FRUIT part of it is responding nicely: a new 'right hold' relay, and some time freeing-off the reel motor. It'll need the clutch discs soaking; it's under load when you hold all three. The 'feature' is going to be fun. First job is to work out what it's SUPPOSED to do, followed by finding out why it DOESN'T. All part of the fun...

  7. The old adage that has served me well for many a year is 'You never say never'! This is definitely a case in point. Well done.

  11. Ok so it was time to start removing bits I started with the coin mech and token mech bracket and then carefully removing the loom I have been given some good tips and pointers by a good Freind on how to do it thank you Tony πŸ‘,so it’s easy to put back together again by numbering up each lamp and making a note of where they go in the mask by doing a drawing of the mask and labelling it up I found it easier just to number both the lamp and the lamp mask with a sharpie pen and then take a photo just in case the number rubbed of the mask when clean it , so first challenge was to open the reel glass the clips that hold it shut were rusted also the hinge had rusted together as well, eventually I freed the two clips at the top and slowly I prized the frame of the glass open Pulling the rusty screws and hinge out of the chip board I was now concerned about the lamp mask and lamp holders being brittle and snapping as I removed the lamps ,but I was very happy to find they were all absolutely fine and I also gently eased the lamp mask away from the glass until the double sided foam separated from the glass so I could cleanse mask as well as the inside of the glass , once this was done I continued with labelling and removing tubes and meters and solenoids door switches again a lot of the screws were so rusted into the chip board they snapped straight away when I attempted to unscrew them I also removed the stickers that were on the machine it looks like this machine was originally a hit the top from the sticker inside which I have saved and will put them back into the new cab when the time comes

  13. Is R1 good ? Any infra-red diode with a narrow beam should work and I am sure you can find a suitable reciever too. It's just that total package B520 is no longer available.
