  2. Now I've had a look, there isn't really an awful lot to it. A couple of control signals come from pins 36 and 37 of IC14, the LED Mux chip, and go to the ~INC and U/~D pins on both digital pot chips. If the U/~D pin is held low and ~INC is pulsed briefly, the volume will be reduced. If the U/~D pin is held high and ~INC is pulsed briefly, the volume will be increased instead. All the extra resistors are doing is making sure the U/~D pins are being pulled high, presumably because the weak pull-ups in either the pot chips or IC14 are too weak. Intersil X9312.pdf
