Yup, you won't get a better grip than with bare wire. the crimp is designed with correct guage of wire. If that gague increases then the crimp won't wrap around correctly.

Nope, it was nothing to do with the price of solder. A crimped connection made with the proper crimping tool is more reliable than a soldered connection.
